South Africa faces a total cost of R8.4 billion to construct five new stadiums and renovate another five for the 2010 soccer World Cup, organisers said yesterday.
The cost is more than three-and-a-half times the R2.3bn estimate made when South Africa won the bid in 2004. It is also well over the R3bn the government said it was setting aside for sport facility upgrades for the tournament a year ago. The 2010 organising committee said it expected parliament to pass legislation on October 24 to enable the disbursement of funds for the appointment of contractors by the end of the year and for construction to start in the new year. Lets hope they get their act together. |

Cape Town will be abuzz with World Cup news next week when President Thabo Mbeki heads a South African delegation at a top-level 2010 Fifa workshop. Just the other day there was talk that SA had far to many problems to host the event. Does this mean that Thabo and Sepp are just hooking up to finalize Australia’s stadiums?
Mbeki and Fifa President Sepp Blatter will also be attending the 2010 Kick- off workshop, a gathering expected to attract commercial partners and representatives of Fifa, as well as delegates from the Local Organising Committee and city delegates. lets hope FIFA and the LOC can finally get things straight and begin preparing SA for the greatest tournament this county has ever seen. |
