Wink Astronomy Night Drive

We had an amazing experience on an Astronomy Night Drive at Olifants.

Unlike other Night Drives you book an Astronomy Night Drive but only pay for it when you return to go on the outing as it is very much dependable on the whether When there's clouds you don't see stars.

I was excited because we were going on our first Astronomy Night Drive but as the time came closer the sky become more and more cloudy and the weather began to change. When we finally arrive at the reception to go on the Game Drive we were the only visitors. Due to the fact that it was holiday and the "normal staff" were on leave, the restaurant manager a more junior guide stood in for the usual stuff who was also excited as this was there first Astronomy Night Drive too. we were given the choice of whether or not we still wanted to go on the game drive.

They took us to the viewpoint just 8km from camp off the main road. On arrival there was a set table waiting for us, with something to eat and drinks (a lot of food for just to guests it was a pleasant surprise).

We did not see any stars due to the weather but had an amazing time talking to the three members of staff (the newbies),we sat on camp chairs with just a few camp lightens for light. All around us was pitch dark and quite and peaceful. Every little sound that was made was amplified. Our mind played tricks on us and we kept imagining that an gigantic elephant was watching from beyond the curtain of darkness or a lion was waiting and lurking around us to decide which bit to eat first.

The restaurant manager and guide told us some of their stories and time flew by. A suddenly we were brought back to reality and it was time to return to the camp.

Our outing went wrong but it was an experience that we will never forget. Well worth it.

Astronomy drive activity is now open for bookings as from 02 June 2007 at Olifants camp again, the new introductory price is R215.00 per person including children. Please remember that the activity is weather driven so if it is cloudy or raining the activity will not go out.
