Default ATM Fraud...be careful

Hey, pay attention this could potentially affect us all...

Bank ATM's Converted to Steal IDs of Bank Customers

A team of organized criminals are installing equipment on legitimate bank ATM's in at least 2 regions to steal both the ATM card number and the PIN. The team sits nearby in a car receiving the information transmitted wirelessly over weekends and evenings from equipment they install on the front of the ATM (see photos). If you see an attachment like this, do not use the ATM and report it immediately to the bank using the phone on the front of the ATM.

The equipment used to capture your ATM card number and PIN are cleverly disguised to look like normal ATM equipment. A "skimmer" is mounted to the front of the normal ATM card slot that reads the ATM card number and transmits it to the criminals sitting in a nearby car.

At the same time, a wireless camera is disguised to look like a leaflet holder and is mounted in a position to view ATM PIN entries.

The thieves copy the cards and use the PIN numbers to withdraw thousands from many accounts in a very short time directly from the bank ATM.

The equipment as it appears installed over the normal ATM bank slot.

The PIN reading camera being installed on the ATM is housed in an innocent looking leaflet enclosure.

Default Damn

Well there's go my day job. Thanks a lot. Now I'm gonna have to think of another way to rob ATM's.

Seriously though, very cunning - definitely need to be careful nowadays when drawing money or doing anything transaction related.

I heard stories the other day about people installing key loggers in internet cafes - then by using the information noted by the loggers they can work out if anybody logged in to do internet banking and transfer funds from your account. That's why it is very important to use the mouse to enter your virtual pin because the logger will only pick up mouse coordinates and not the data itself (the numbers on the keypad are randomised so that the mouse coordinates tell you nothing).

Default Education Minister and Correctional Services Minister homes looted

Police have admitted that thieves had looted 2 ministers homes after breaching high security at the Groote Schuur ministerial estate in Rondebosch at the weekend.

They got away with valuables from the homes of Education Minister Naledi Pandor and Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour.

They even tried to steal the wheels off a big 4x4 vehicle owned by Balfour, but appeared to have been disturbed in the attempt.

This is the latest in a series of breaches in the security of senior government figures by criminals under the noses of the "elite" VIP Protection Unit. I am glad these guys are not looking after my shit.

Police said it was early yesterday that they had discovered that intruders had forced their way into the 2 ministers homes.

Intruders got away with two laptop computers, a video recorder and a cellphone from Pandor's home.

Minister Balfour suffered worse losses.

Intruders, suspected to be the same gang, stole a trophy fashioned around a full bottle of Jack Daniels whiskey - a gift to Balfour from the Department of Correctional Services.

Other items stolen were a DVD player, a video recorder, clothes and a laptop.

Outside Balfour's house, the thugs broke a window of his Toyota Landcruiser and started taking off the wheels. (Maybe Zuma needs some new wheels).

Detectives were baffled as to how the gang had thought they would be able to sneak out past the gate guard post with huge mag wheels.

Ha Ha, all we need now is for the Minister of Safety and Security Mr C Nqakula to be robbed and then finally the ANC will do something about crime.
After all Mr C Nqakula thinks that SA does not have a crime problem.

Default Internet Cafe fraud

Beware of logging into your bank account at internet cafes. Standard Bank security head Herman Singh has confirmed that clients from the various banks had been affected by the scam, which gleaned their details using spyware at internet cafes mostly in all major cities in South Afriac

Scorpions have arrested a Capetonian suspected of hacking into bank accounts. Fraudulent transactions were conducted using Vodacom's data service.

They can also simply plug a small device into the PCs USB port which will then remember everything that gets typed on the keyboard.

Make sure that you log out and make sure that browser has not stored your details.

Default Safe in South Africa

Have you ever thought of using Travelers Cheques in South Africa. Even as the South African Rand Cheque does not exist any more, Euro Travelers Cheques or US Travelers Cheques work well.
If they are stolen, you recive refund within 24 hours - as American Express promises.
