Worth a visit
I love taking long meandering drives, at times ending up on rarely used back roads or the gravel farm roads, enjoying the tranquil and unspoilt beauty of areas seldom seen by others. This particular day we planned on visiting Sulina, the Fairy Sanctuary in Swellendam, a truly inspiring place of beauty, love and peace, a must see, if possible. On travelling the uneventful Route 60 from Worcester through the stark, semi-arid Klein Karoo, when spotting the directional sign made a decision to go via Bonnievale instead of the planned Ashton route. Bonnievale is on the banks of the Breede River, surrounded by the Langeberg and Riviersonderend mountain ranges and forms part of the Robertson Wine valley. What made Bonnievale memorable is the boundary fences of the farms with there colourful arrangement of bougainvillea, all in full bloom and cannas, grouped together in various shades of colour, turning the drive into a terrific picturesque journey of discovery. Many tourists bound for Route 62 tend to bypass Bonnievale because of its insipid beginnings. Be assured, it is a journey worth its weight in gold.
