Thread: Free World Cup tickets for South Africans

  1. Free World Cup tickets for South Africans

South Africa will get 120,000 free tickets for the 2010 Fifa World Cup, Fifa secretary general Jérôme Valcke said in Durban last Saturday.

The tickets would form part of the Group 4 category tickets that will be distributed solely to South African residents.

"The cost of the free tickets will be met by our commercial partners," said Valcke.

The 2010 World Cup will see up to three million tickets being sold of which a total of between 15 and 20 percent would be Category 4 tickets.

According to FIFA ticket prices will range from USD 20 (R140) for a category 4 ticket for a group stage match to USD 900 (R6 265) for a category 1 ticket for the final. The pricing is said to reflect FIFA's positioning of the FIFA World Cup as a premium international sporting event, yet also take account of the South African market.

Category 4 tickets will be solely reserved for South African fans and sold exclusively in ZAR. “All South Africans contributed to bringing the FIFA World Cup to our country. So it is only befitting that we make tickets available to the ordinary fans at affordable prices," Local Organising Committee chief executive Danny Jordaan told FIFA.

Jordaan said measures would be taken to ensure that these tickets would not end up being sold at exorbitant prices on the black market.

The first phase of ticket sales is expected to begin today 20th February 2009.

  3. Will there be insiders buying for outsiders ?

This is a big concern as people will buy in bulk and try to sell off to outside countries.

Do fifa have and securities in place to stop this eg Id books passports..

  4. Id checks...

I myself has been to WC2006 and Euro2008... Both times it was said that Id-checks would be done when entering the stadiums but they didnt. I do thinks its to much work for them even tough they will check some people during high risk matches like if Germany/Holland would play England.

Probably its just propaganda from Fifa to scare off some black market sellers...
