Cape Town has become one of the leading gay tourist destinations in the world.
Cape Town's popularity for gay accommodation are many fold - primarily because South Africa had the first consitution in the world which protected individuals from discrimination based on sexual orientation. This was passed in 1996 (race and gender were the other primary candidates). It is said that Cape Town has more gay people per capita than any other place in South Africa - not hard to believe given the number of overtly gay clubs in the city. Of course all clubs in Cape Town see a mixture of gay and straight couples happily intermingling. Many businesses and restaurants are proudly gay-owned or gay-run. Most notably are the guest houses and residences which have been set up to cater exclusively for the gay market. There is also an annual event known as the Mother City Queer Project - it begain as gay drag-orientated costume party. Taking place 10 days before Christmas, it now serves any avid party goer. Many beaches in Cape Town have also become known as gay beaches - Clifton 3rd being the most popular. Sandy Bay, the nudist beach, also sports a gay section close to the far rocky section of the beach. The area which mainly caters for gay accommodation is Green Point - close to the gay clubs and beaches. You can see a list of Green Point accommodation by clicking the link below.
