Thread: Jo'berg car rental for Kruger

  1. Jo'berg car rental for Kruger

    Hello all,

I am hoping for a little advice. We are planning an early September trip through SA and want to take the train from Cape Town in order to visit Kruger (obviously making it only as far as Jo'berg). Can anyone tell me if it is possible to rent a vehicle at the train station in Jo'berg?

If so, I'd also like to ask if anyone could recommend a particularly good car hire co. and what are people's opinions on normal vehicle vs 4x4, etc., for visiting KNP.

    Thanks,
    Scott

Yes you can rent a car from JHB station. All you need is a regukar car for the park. All the roads are in good condition. I suggest the car should be hi off the ground. You can contact Pam at pam@visaexpress.co.za for great car hire rates.

  4. Thanks for responding Paula. We are still in the beginning our our trip planning but believe we will take the train from Cape Town to Jo'burg early in September - the first week - and were looking into the idea of renting a car at the station and driving out to the park. It looks like Ming, in a response after yours, has supplied enough information to start on. Thanks

  5. Thank you for your quick response. It is just the kind of information I was hoping for. I will contact the person you suggest and see what comes out of that.

From your experience, would you say that booking far ahead to stay in small bungalows at the camps is a necessity? Originally we had thought that it might be nice to be a bit spontaneous and stop when and where it felt right, but after a bit more reading it would seem that a set itinerary is really needed for a short 5-6 day visit and places may be fully booked. Any suggestions for early September? Your advice is appreciated.

    Hi

To answer your question it is most advisable to book in advance as this is one of our major tourist attractions. September is high season and I would hate you to be disappointed.

You may want to look at a Toyota Avanza as it is high off the ground and very spacious. It is also good on fuel.

hm, make sure that the car hire comp has branches all over the country, that the one way fees are not to high, that you have unlimited km, supercover insurance, 2nd driver fee etc.

2x4 vs. 4x4 - what will you need the 4x4 for? You don't need a 4x4 in most of the tourist destinations incl. most of the NPs.
