Kruger Self Drive advice

Hi,
I grew up in Kenya years ago, though now live in London. I'm heading down to SA to hopefully spend a week or so in Kruger with my family. We're planning on driving through ourselves, and was wondering if anyone had any advice - from places to stay (camping sights, lodges etc) to general ideas.
Been a long while since I've done a saffari drive, and just wondering what people thought...
