Default Cycle Tour

The starting point, on Hertzog Boulevard, is always a good one and if travelling by car, spectators should park in any of the nearby streets and walk to the starting line.

The Newlands Forest area along the M3, accessible from the east, is another good point at which to catch the fast-riding action. Paradise Road, coming in from Claremont's Main Road, will be good for watching the cyclists try their first steep climb on Edinburgh Drive. The drive to the top of Wynberg Hill is the steepest gradient of the tour and Primrose Avenue, Torquay Avenue and Sidmouth Road off Herschell Walk are access roads.

Spectators can then catch the cyclists on Steenberg Road, at St James and Kalk Bay and the traffic circle in Fish Hoek. This will be followed by Glencairn Beach, the Simon's Town main road, Scarborough and the Noordhoek Farm Village.

Another favourite spot will be in Hout Bay, on the corner of Princess and Main or on Chapman's Peak Drive. Then it will be the dreaded Suikerbossie, with spectator access from Hout Bay or Nooitgedacht Road.

The Camps Bay beachfront is the second-last viewing point before cyclists head for Sea Point and that steep downhill which will end in a sharp left turn into Victoria Road as cyclists make their way to Queens Road.

A pedestrian bridge will allow spectators to walk across the road to the promenade for a last glimpse of the cyclists as they make a pedaling dash for the finish line.

Default Essentials for the race

1. Your bike (it's a no-brainer but organisers know one guy who arrived at a race with no bike.)

2. Your helmet and shoes,

3. Water bottles and hydration pack, filled with water or energy drink to keep hydrated.

4. Spare tubes and bike tools, including a pump.

5. Gloves to keep your hands dry and protect them from the sun.

6. Sun block.

7. Your time chip needs to be strapped to your ankle. Do this before leaving home.

8. Energy snacks, to give you the boost when you need to tackle those hills. Avoid bananas, which can squash, and chocolate, which will melt.

9. Your race number.
