It is difficult to know as a foreigner if it is as bad as some people state it is or if it is only a matter of knowing where to go and when. Of course we know that at night it generally worse and also to be aware at stop signs and traffic lights, but where else? In guidebooks it often says that caution should be taken and so on but no more specific guidelines are given.
We are basically travelling from Johannesburg to Kruger and back a week later with rental car in March. Are there any particular roads that we should avoid? Main HWYs are OK or? Heard that outside Kruger Park people are lurking to robb the rich tourists, one friend even stated that it is unsafe inside Kruger at picnicspots. Any particular gate to avoid? On returning to JHB and staying one night somewhere close to airport, any suggestion on where? Not too expensive accommodation, please. After JHB we will fly to CT and spend 1,5 week. Any specific advice on where to absolutely NOT go/drive? Regards from Sweden |

There are plenty of places not to go. There is no reason you would need to go to any of the more dangerous areas of jhb or cape town, so no reason to worry. As far as travelling is concerned you should just use common sense. Don't wonder around with cameras, cellphones etc visable, and don't accept help, advice from anyone you have any reason to doubt (unfortunatley, thats most people) . Don't spend any more time in jhb central than absolutley neccesary.
Make sure your travel/health insurance is good. |
