Default State sets aside R3,8bn for 2010 transport

Quote:
The South African government has set aside R3.8 billion for public transport for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, Transport Minister Jeff Radebe said on Sunday.

In his opening remarks at a two-day transport Indaba in Soweto, Radebe said the first batch of grants have already been allocated to municipalities hosting the 2010 soccer matches.

"Your government has set aside R3,8-billion for public transport for the 2010 Soccer World Cup," he told delegates in a half-full auditorium at the University of Johannesburg's Soweto campus.

Default Finance Minister expected to release R15 billion for 2010

Quote:
Mbeki promised soccer's world body, Fifa, that his government was determined to ensure a successful tournament.

He told the Fifa workshop that the government's high level of involvement in the event "reflects not only the seriousness of the task that lies ahead, but also our government's commitment to make 2010 an eminently successful World Cup".

In his medium-term Budget tomorrow, Finance Minister Trevor Manuel is expected to release at least R15 billionfrom the Treasury coffers to improve transport systems and build or upgrade 10 stadiums in preparation for 2010.
