This is largely dependent on how much money you want to spend. There are some very luxorious safari camps near Kruger that are over $1,000 per night, or you can camp. Also, what kind of activities are you interested in? Safari? Beach? Culture?

From the deserts in the west to the beautiful high forest of the east,it is an area of vast contrasts in climate, geography and animal and plant life.
Groves of date palms grow in the west , in the east , grassy downlands roll to meet the forests that fringe the coast. On the central plateau lies the semi - arid Karoo, with its vast sheep runs,wind-pumps and flat - topped hillocks - the famous koppies which provide South Africa with its most characteristic and scenic emblem. In the far south- west of the province, the continent of Africa ends almost exactly as it begins thousands of kilometres to the north, with a Mediterranean climate of winter rain and dry summers, and folded snow - tipped mountains strangely reminiscent of the Atlas range in the north. Cape Province offers excellent roads and freedom from the African blights of malarial mosquitoes,Tsetse flies and bilharzia. There are superlative beaches, ranging from the sweeping shores of Muizenberg,Plettenberg, St Francis and Algoa, to the beautiful intimate coast around East London, with its warm ,safe water, lazy lagoons, rivers and green forests crowding close to the edge of the sea. The province is a happy hunting ground for the enthusiast - the collector of shells or semi - precious stones, the observer of wild life, the botanist. For the historian there are the artifacts and rock art of the Bushmen. For the connoisseur there are wines, fruit and intriguing local dishes. For the climber and walker there are the mountains - the wilderness trails, crystal pools, caves and balancing rocks of the Cedarberg range; the dramatic views of Cape Town and Table Bay from Table Mountain; the wild - flower paradise of the Hottentots - Holland Mountains. The Hex River Mountains, Du Toit's Kloof, Jonkershoek,Langberg,Tsitsikama, Baviaanskloof and the massive, little - visited southern extensions of the Drakensberg all offer endless possibilities for adventure and exploration. |

From talking to lots of tourists sitting near me on my regular Cape Town / Frankfurt trips, there is a very clear pattern what most of them do over 2 weeks in South Africa:
Kruger Park & "Panorama Route" Drive to Durban Fly to Port Elizabeth Drive Garden Route & Oudtshoorn area Drive Swellendam and Wine routes. Cape Town Fly home. I can't fault that as a first off, general purpose visit, except that I would drive between Durban and Port Elizabeth as well. And maybe I would do it in the reverse direction to the above, if you want to leave with a feeling of having visited "Africa"....Cape Town is far too much like Europe. |

Of course, you must go to Kruger National Park. You can't miss it! The rest camps are a little pricey ($95-105 USD) / night for basic bungalow), but worth it, I think to get on the early morning and night drives when the park gates are closed.
For beach, we went to Sodwana Bay, north of Durban, near St. Lucia. It's the most gorgeous beach I've ever seen. It's in a resesrve, so there's not a whole lot of restaurants or places to go at night. We stayed at Mseni Lodge, that has a restaurant & bar. There are campgrounds nearby that are less expensive. If you like hiking, then you must go to the Drankensburg Mts. Fabulous scenery and unspoiled beauty. Capetown could be a holiday in itself. There is so much to see and do around Capetown, don't even try to see it all. We enjoyed hiking on Table Mt., wine tasting at the vineyards and drving to Cape Point for an all too short photo tour. Enjoy your trip planning! You have some difficult decisions ahead, but whatever you decide, I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time! |
