Default Xhosa language and culture camps in the Transkei

The Village Experience
Takes place 2 to 3 times annually.

Hosted by Craig Charnock in Nqileni Village, Bulungula, Eastern Cape.
Or Kath Nurse and Sibongile @ Mdumbi village, also Eastern Cape, both within 50kms of Coffee Bay.

Description:
A Xhosa culture and language learning experience providing opportunities for establishing relationships and empathy with the Xhosa speaking people of South Africa, with the intent to aid the process of effective transformation by opening communication channels. Guests stay with a host family, participating in the daily household activities to their desired extent, from wood and water fetching, to cooking, cleaning or helping kids with homework and sports. Daily language lessons with Craig involve his daily visits to your homestead and revision and clarification of work he has given you the day before. The experience is otherwise meant to be enjoyable as one soaks in the atmosphere and slower pace of life of this remote, beautiful and welcoming village by the sea, enjoying the many pleasures that life in the village has to offer.

"Spending a week living and being in the village was incredible, i was completely amazed at how i was able to communicate and have real conversations with my family there - it has made me feel so much more confident in speaking and connected with South Africa and being South African."

- Lorien Miller -

"I really loved the combination of classroom learning and practicing with the families and others, the unspoilt beauty, the hospitality and friendliness of everyone, the acceptance and “safe” feeling in the village, the simplicity of your teaching method, and the excellent notes! Tremendous improvement in confidence and understanding of the language, it really helps to learn with others. It really was a fantastic experience with benefits to ourselves, our company, our clients, as well as the people of the village."

- Charmaine Groves, Old Mutual -
